Legion is a fantasy strategy game with elements of role-playing genre. The player starts the game with a group of five characters. The way of progress is not specified, with no specific path to follow. The authors give two possibilities - adventure wandering or strategic conquest. The first option allows travelling through the land, exploring areas, trading, talking with encountered characters, recruiting new team members, visiting settlements and towns. The second one requires conquering the villages and cities, spying, expansion of fortifications and weapon facilities, setting tax, forming legions and competition with all three remaining AI commanders.
The game features nine races. The gameplay is divided into a strategic map and a terrain action. Each character is described by six indicators (strength, energy, speed, resistance, magic, experience). The player may buy equipment increasing character stats for each team member. Orders may be given to the whole team or a single character. Warriors may use traditional weapons, magical items and numerous spells.
